Title:
Gap of Dunloe
Location:
Killarney National Park, Co. Kerry, Ireland
The Gap of
Dunloe, hewn two million years ago by giant, slow moving ice. It cuts through
the Tomies Mountain, Purple Mountain and Macgillycuddy's Reeks ,It starts
at Kate Kearney's Cottage and ends in the Black Valley. While driving through
the night before I saw this image. A word of warning "Don't Drive It",
it's eight miles long with only a few pullovers and the Jaunting cars (a light
horse-drawn cart carring four passengers) have the right of way. The next
morning I hiked in a couple of mles from the Black Valley to get this image
and while setting up my 4X5 camera I saw a herd of ponies trotting along the
road from the Black Valley where they are stabled on there way to work to
pull the Jaunting car. The ponies knew the way as no one was leading them.
The Gap is well worth the trip in the Jaunting, car or biking or hiking.
